Lesson 2

Imaginary Wildflowers

In this lesson of the Simply Watercolor Series, you will learn how to paint these beautiful, whimsical flowers. They are called "Imaginary Wildflowers" because they aren't modeled after any specific type of flower, but rather the basic shape of any wildflower. Get ready to do a lot of color mixing and exploring as you find the color combinations you enjoy most.

As with every Simply Watercolor Series lesson, you will create beautiful watercolors while being encouraged to let go of perfectionism and embrace experimentation. The subject of wildflowers is perfect for this because they can be painted in any way and they will still look gorgeous!

Don't worry if you haven't enrolled in lesson 1 of the series. Each lesson is a stand alone course.

Simply Watercolor Series

This lesson is part of a series of playful, colorful, and whimsical watercolor tutorials called Simply Watercolor Series. These tutorials are designed for the beginner watercolor artist, but don’t let that stop you from joining in the fun if you’re more advanced.

In each lesson, I will guide you through a step-by-step tutorial to paint a whimsical watercolor creation that can be cut out and used in your art journal, handmade greeting card, swap item, and more. Each lesson will include an in-depth focus on a watercolor technique, an addition of a mixed media element, and a helpful tip for beginners. These lessons are designed to make watercolor fun and accessible.

Your Instructor

Hi, I’m Tiffany Sharpe. I enjoy working with watercolor, mixed media, and creating unique handmade books. I’m a former chemistry teacher turned artist. Although not formally trained in art, I enjoy learning through experimentation and play. I hope to encourage others to let go of perfectionism and embrace a stress-free creative practice of their own. After much traveling, I’ve come to call Minnesota my home, where I live with my husband, two children, cat and puppy. When I’m not digging in my garden or learning a new hobby, you’ll find me out in nature collecting weeds and other treasures.

  • You will be provided with a printable supply list of all the supplies that I use, and any alternatives that will also work. I always encourage you to use what you have, and help you figure out ways to make what you have work for you.

Q. Do I need to know anything about watercolor or mixed media before I enroll?

Q. Is this a membership? Will I be charged for lesson 3 and so on?

  • This is not a membership. Each lesson is a full course that takes you through the steps from start to finish so you can paint the topic of each lesson in its entirety.

Q. Why didn't you make a larger course with multiple lessons?

  • I wanted to make a smaller course where we can create a project from start to finish, with the focus on one main watercolor technique at a time. There are multiple techniques shown in each course, but there will be an in-depth video of one technique in each lesson. Each lesson will also include a mixed media focus, and a helpful tip on things like how to care for your supplies.
  • I also wanted to keep the price low so you can try out a lesson with no obligation to buy more. In a larger course, you could pay over a hundred (or hundreds of) dollars, and many never complete these large courses.
